MARSHALL MIDDLE SCHOOL       LIFE SCIENCE 7       MRS. DATTILO      STUDENT REQUIREMENTS

  1. MATERIALS NEEDED- As a good scientist, you need to come to class every day with the proper materials.  These materials are 1) a pencil 2) your notes/packet .  Please take the large textbook home to use for homework.  I will have smaller unit books in class for your use.  If your book is lost or destroyed during the school year, you will have to pay for it ($60.00) before a new one is issued.  If the book is found, your money will be refunded.

  1. LATENESS AND ABSENCES- Passing time is 4 minutes.  Be sure to be in your seat and ready to begin class on time.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to see me before class upon your return to school about the work you missed and to make arrangements to make up your work.  All work must be made up.  Failure to make up the work will result in a zero grade for the assignment or test.  If you have a planned absence ie GOAL, sports, vacation, etc., it is your responsibility to see me in advance and get the make-up work.

  1. NOTEBOOKS/PACKETS- Good scientists keep neat and up-to-date notes.  In order to help you practice organization skills, we will work together in class to keep your notes organized.

  1. TESTS AND QUIZZES - There will be a test after each chapter is completed.  Quizzes may be announced or unannounced.  Be prepared by reviewing your notes each night.  All tests will be announced at least two days in advance so that you can prepare for them.

  1. GRADING- Grading is based on your performance on tests, quizzes, labs, and homework assignments.  Your grade will be determined by a point system.  A grade sheet will be give to you at the beginning of each nine week period to keep track of the points earned.  To determine your grade at any time, add the total possible points, and then add the points you earned.  Divide your point total by the point possible total.  The district grading scale can be found in the student’s handbook.  The final grade in life science will be based on total points for the year.

  1. BEING EXCUSED FROM THE ROOM - Make sure you have your homework when you come to science class.  The hall pass is for emergencies-not for getting assignments from your locker.  If you forget your assignment in your locker, you can bring it to me and receive credit as soon as class is over.  Use the bathroom and drinking fountain between classes.

  1. HOMEWORK - Homework will be given in this class on Mondays through Thursdays.  It must be completed before you come to class.  Homework will be checked in two ways.  It may be checked and given a grade for accuracy or just completeness.  If you leave your homework at home, you may turn it in the next day for half credit.  Please don’t share your homework with other students.  Any infraction of this rule will result in 0 credit for both students as well as additional consequences.  In order to be ready for chapter tests, homework not done on time must still be completed and included in your notebook. If you don’t do this, you may not do as well on the test.  When the class goes over an assignment, it is your job to make any corrections to your copy so that you are prepared for tests.

  1. LABS - We will be doing many labs and lab activities this year.  Scientists do their preliminary lab reports in pencil so that changes can be made as the lab progresses.  Therefore, your labs are to be written in pencil.  Labs that are not written neatly or those written in ink or with items crossed out will not be accepted.  During the lab, you may work only with your assigned lab partner.  You may not copy the results from any other group.

  1.  SAFETY - Your safety in science class is my prime concern.  Therefore, students who do not follow the established safety lab rules will not be permitted to complete the lab and will be given a zero score for the lab in addition to other consequences.  You are not to perform unauthorized experiments.  If you want to try something that is not in the lab procedure, get permission from me first.  Safety glasses must be worn during those labs that require their use.
