The Rockhopper Penguin

The Rockhopper penguins are smallest of the Crested penguins.  They are about 20 inches tall and weigh between 5 and 10 pounds.  They have a yellow crest that is long and droopy.  They have red eyes and beaks.  They also have yellow eyebrows.  I think these penguins are really cute.  Do you?

These penguins live in the sub-Antarctic Islands.  Like the Macaroni penguins, they stay out to sea half of the year.  They build the nest on very high, rocky hills.  They also build their nest from pebbles and twigs.

The female will lay 2 eggs, but only one will hatch.  Both parents take turns incubating the egg.  Only the female will bring food to the chick after it hatches.  The mother will bring the chick fish, squid, and krill to eat.

The male protects the egg and chick from Skua gulls.

The Rockhopper get its name because it hops up and down steep slopes to get to the nest.
