TV I Grading Policy: 2007-2008

The TV I class is designed to provide experience & education in the fundamentals of television production. Our focus will be on the following five critical elements of TV production:

-          Pre-Production

-          Production/Cinematography

-          Post-Production

-          Teamwork & Responsibility

-          Professionalism

As a member of the TV I class, you are responsible for the completion of all assignments.  If you wish, you may also work as a member of a production team for one of our cable divisions.

-          News

-          Entertainment

-          Sports

-          Community Relations

-          TGIF

The following are my expectations of you as a mature young adult enrolled in this class:

1) Be respectful of yourself and others.

2) Put forth an honest effort.

3) Be willing to ask for and give assistance.

4) Be involved.

5) Exhibit appropriate behavior.

6) Express your creativity and flexibility.

7) Be here on time and ready to work.

Grading Criteria:

1)                   Complete various quizzes, projects, duties as assigned by Mr. West

2)                   Serve as a camera person for one week for the AM Announcements.

This is a workshop based class. You will work on most projects as a member of a team. Self-motivation and an ability to work effectively in a group are both critical components of your success. Your grade will be partially based on your ability to contribute your “fair share” to the group’s efforts.

Late Projects:

If a project/Assignment is turned in after the final deadline, the following point reductions will occur:

1 school day late:                 10% reduction

2-4 school days late:                           20% reduction

5-7 school days late:                           30% reduction

8-10 school days late:                         40% reduction

11 + school days late:                         Project will not be accepted.

The grading scale for TV I is identical to the NA scale. Grades are rounded up. Ex) 89.4% = B, 89.5%  = A.

Extra Credit Opportunities

Festivals and Contests: Participation in a broadcasting or film festival/contest is worth 100 extra credit points. Placing 1st in a category in the festival/contest is worth an additional 100 points. Festival/contest notices will be placed on the “Check It Out” board by the double doors.

Going Above and Beyond: It is possible to receive extra-credit points for providing video assistance for a teacher or class at NASH. In some instances, it is possible to receive extra-credit for assisting with NATV projects to which you have not been assigned. Division Leaders are able to grant extra-credit for performance as they see fit. Providing assistance where needed and being a team-player, while not criteria for extra-credit, are taken into consideration if a student’s grade falls short of an expected grade.

General Information & Guidance for a Successful NATV Experience:

Equipment (cameras, tripods, etc.) is traditionally not checked out overnight to TV I students. As such, ALL projects must be filmed and edited here at NASH. Once you are in TV II and Advanced TV, you will have the opportunity to film outside of the school. Exceptions to this policy are at the discretion of Mr. West and are rarely given.

It is imperative that all work turned in be school-appropriate, professional and informative. As you progress in your knowledge and skills, a significant part of your project grade will be based on the overall quality of the content, filming and editing. Follow the guidelines you are given. Deadlines are also a huge part of your grade. Keep that in mind.

Another critical component of the TV I class is your creativity and a willingness to think outside of your comfort zone. This class is project based in order to give you the opportunity to work on your filming and editing skills. Think of this as a journey to TV Mastery!!

As a member of the TV I class, you are given certain freedoms not enjoyed by traditional students. Your open access to the building, ability to leave the building and film on the campus grounds and permission to be out of class without a pass are all privileges. If they are abused, they will be taken away. With freedom comes responsibility. The building administration and teachers are willing to allow your freedom based on the belief you will exhibit responsibility. Do not let them, or me, down!

Proposals for new NATV programming are always being accepted & encouraged. If you have an idea, throw it out for everyone to see. Your idea may be the next piece of programming we bring to NATV. If you keep it to yourself, there is ZERO chance it will air!
