Intro Deutsch A – Written Final – Study Guide

Our written final has twelve multiple-choice sections of various sizes for a grand total of 80 points. The test will cover the areas of listening, reading, grammar, culture, and writing based on the material covered in Chapters 1-9. An excellent resource for review is the summary of functions on pages R2 to R6. There is also a writing section with 4 questions to answer worth a total of 20 points. (Sections are not in the order they appear on the test.)
Part 1 – (5 pts.) In this section, you will listen to 5 young people describe what they wear to parties. You will match their description with the correct picture on the page. To prepare, review the clothes vocabulary from Chapter 5 (page 139)
Part 2 – (5 pts.) In this section, you will read 5 descriptions of people and match them with the pictures provided. To prepare, know the vocab for describing people from the Dritte Stufe in Chapter 3, page 80.
Part 3 + 4 – (5 pts.) In this section, you will answer 3 questions about where buildings are located on a map. In the second part, you will read and follow directions in German and choose from 4 places to tell where you end up. To prepare, know your directions and the symbols for different buildings from Chapter 9. (See Wortschatz on page 221.)
Part 5 – (6 pts.) In this section, you will choose the correct form of either haben or sein from 4 choices. To prepare, know the forms of these 2 verbs – chart is on page R18.

Part 6 – (4 pts.) In this section, you will choose from 4 choices the correct form of a modal verb to complete the sentence correctly. To prepare, know the forms of wollen, müssen, sollen, and können. The chart of conjugations is on page R18.
Part 7 – (10 pts.) In this section, you will choose from 4 choices the correct form of an irregular verb to complete the sentence correctly. To prepare, know the conjugations of separable prefix verbs (i.e. anziehen), stem vowel-changing verbs (i.e. fahren), regular verbs (i.e. machen), and the past tense verb of waren. These conjugations are on pages R17-20.
Part 8 – (5 pts.) In this section, you will choose from 3 choices the correct form of a verb used as a command to complete the sentence correctly. To prepare, know the three command forms of du, ihr, and Sie by looking over page R19.

Part 9 – (15 pts.) In this section, you will choose the correct definite article in the first blank that matches the noun used and then in the second and/or third blank, replace the noun with its correct pronoun. To prepare, know pronoun replacement and the vocab with the der, die, or das from page 139 (clothes vocab).

Part 10– (10 pts.) In this section, you will select the correct indefinite article from 3 choices (ein, eine, and einen) for 5 items and in the second part, you will select from 3 forms of the negative article (kein, keine, keinen) for the last 5 items. To prepare, know your vocab for food and how to use indefinite articles with nouns. Check page R13.

Part 11 – (5 pts.) This section covers temperatures and weather in Germany and reading a weather map. You will decide if the 5 statements are a) true (stimmt) or b) false (stimmt nicht). To prepare, review the information covered in Chapter 7, Dritte Stufe – page 182-184.
Part 12 – (10 pts.) In this section, you will answer 10 true/false questions in English about the culture of Germany. To prepare, review the Ein Wenig Landeskunde boxes in Chapters 1 through 9.
Example: True / False – German stores stay open later than American stores.
Each of the 4 writing sections are worth 5 points for a total of 20 points for the writing section of your final. Forming some idea of what you are going to write ahead of time is not only recommended, but also beneficial. The less the you spend thinking about what you are going to write, the more time you will have to complete the whole test in the class period.
1) What types of chores do you have to do and how often do you do them? Write 5 sentences about that topic. To prepare, know the vocab for chores from page 173.
2) Describe what your room looks like and the furniture in it. What furniture do you like and what don’t you like. To prepare, know the vocab for furniture from Chapter 3.
3) Write a dialog between you and a gift –buying service as you ask for ideas on what to buy for the mothers of 2 families you will be staying with. (3 lines for you and 2 for the gift service) To prepare, think of gifts that might be appropriate for mothers and check page 285 and page R9 for gift ideas.
4) Describe you school schedule in 5 sentences using sequencing words (i.e. first, after that). To prepare, review the names of your classes using page R8 and Chapter 4. Also review the forms of haben.
