Intro Deutsch A – Kapitel Acht – Study Guide

Our eighth test has a grand total of 50 points. The test will cover the areas of listening, reading, culture, and writing based on the material covered in the eighth chapter. This test doesn’t have the standard 5 point value for each section.
Part A – (4 pts.) In this section, you will listen to several people talk about what they or others are supposed to do. You will then pick from 4 choices as a summary of what they should do. To prepare, know the forms of sollen from page 199 and recall some of our vocab for foods, clothing, concerts, and chores.
Part B – (6 pts.) In this section, you will listen to Karl and Britta’s conversation about preparing something for a friend’s birthday party. Based on their conversation, answer 6 stimmt/stimmt nicht questions. To prepare, know your units of measures and vocabulary you might need in baking a cake (flour, butter, eggs, etc.)
Part C – (5 pts.) In this section, you will listen to Anna and Steffi talk about what they did last Saturday. Then you will answer 5 multiple choice questions in English about their conversation. To prepare, know how to listen in the past tense and pay close attention to the sequence of events (past, present, future).
Part D – (5 pts.) In this section, you will read Susanne’s letter to her grandmother about her first week in Stuttgart. Her computer has gone haywire and you will need to put the letter back in the correct chronological order. To prepare, know the past tense forms and the Wortschatz on page 207 (time expressions).
Part F – (5 pts.) In this section, you will look at two advertisements and then answer 5 questions in English based on information given through cognates, visual clues, and context. To prepare, you might want to review some of the tips given in the Zum Lesen sections throughout the book, especially page 210-211.
Part G – (5 pts.) This section covers amounts in German and units of measure. You will answer 5 questions about whether the amounts of an item are a) appropriate or b) inappropriate. To prepare, review the Wortschatz on page 202 and the EWL on page 203.
Part H – (4 pts.) In this section, you will list 4 differences between the ways Germans and Americans and Germans buy and store foods. This section is in English. To prepare, recall class discussions and the EWL box on page 198.
Part I – (5 pts.) In this section, you will write a paragraph (5 sentences) describing where you and various family members shopped last week and what each of you bought. To prepare, know how to use the past tense forms of kaufen (hat gekauft) and sein (war) from the Dritte Stufe. Also know the vocab for some items you purchased.
Part J – (6 pts.) In this section, you will write a conversation between you and a salesperson at a produce shop. The salesperson will ask what you want and if you want something else. Include the amounts of each item you want in your answer. You and the salesperson will each have 3 lines. To prepare, do this section ahead of time by figuring out the questions for “Can I help you?” and “Anything else?” Also, prepare a few items that you want to purchase along quantities of those items.
